Prepare for an adventurous and moderately demanding hike up to the wilderness of Herrestadsfjället.

Prepare for an adventurous and moderately demanding hike up to the wilderness of Herrestadsfjället. The trail starts in the lowland forest, passing through the large marsh Havskuren and ends amongst the bare mountains and heaths reminiscent of the time when the mountain was forestless.

Herrestadsfjället is a popular area for recreation, hiking and there are plenty of lakes for fishing. The area is just as popular during winter, offering trails for skiing between the cabins or ice skating on the natural ices of the lakes. In the nature reserve of Herrestadsfjället there are many ready-made camp sites, some with shelters and some with cottages. Along the trail you will pass two cabins, Hällestugan and Krokestugan. Hällestugan was built by Friluftsfrämjandet in the 1940s and is beautifully located by the lake Stora Hällesvattnet and Krokestugan is located at the shore of Västra Krokevattnet at the end of the trail stage. The cabins are well-visited and during the winter they are open on Sundays. On these days you can enjoy freshly baked waffles in Hällestugan. Further along the trail Friluftsfrämjandet has a “Kåta”on a small peninsula in Västra Krokevattnet. Kåtan is a tipi shaped shelter open all year round and can accommodate up to 15 overnight guests.

A must see along the trail is Åleslån, which is a settlement from the 1600s that the non-profit organization “Friluftsfrämjandet” together with the Municipality of Uddevalla have restored. Around the farm there is both cultural history, with remnants of mills and places of residence, and also a nature trail focusing on the biodiversity of the area.

Fishing is free in Bjursjön at the start of the trail stage, but if you plan to fish in any of the mountain lakes you need a fishing license. For more info on this see
